Also known as Waxcaps, Hygrocybe must surely been the most colourful genus of larger fungi. They inhabit old grassland, occasionally appearing woods, providing a spectacular disply of colour. Whether due to a biological connection or simple habitat preference, they are invariably found with mosses.
Some are edible and good - Meadow Waxcap, Snowy Waxcap and Scarlet Waxcap being the best - but most are too rare or simply too pretty to pick.
